Maryville University seeks a dynamic professional to be a collaborative member of the Student Life team as a Personal Counselor for campus. The Personal Counselor’s primary role is to support the mental health needs of a diverse and multicultural student population by providing individual and group counseling services, as well as preventative outreach and programming. In addition to general counseling services, this counselor needs to be proficient in assessment and counseling of students who practice risky use, abuse, or are addicted to substances, as well as support students in recovery from addictions. This position will also provide clinical services such as group therapy, triage/intake assessments, supervision and training of intern/practicum graduate students, outreach programming, clinical consultation, and crisis intervention.

Responsibilities

• Provide individual and group therapy, triage/intake assessments, and crisis intervention to students regarding a variety of mental health and developmental concerns
• Coordinate care and services for students struggling with substance use or abuse or who are committed to pursuing recovery from substance use or abuse
• Provide education sessions for students found in violation of the University’s substance use policies according to their sanction
• Provide outreach programs and consultation to students, faculty, and staff to address mental health and developmental concerns of a diverse student population
• Actively participate in and contribute to the staff planning, program planning, and evaluation of services
• Participate in staff meetings and case conferences within the Office of Personal Counseling; participate in professional development; and participate in University-wide committees
• Provide hiring, supervision, and evaluation of work study student staff
• Participate in the supervision and training of practicum/intern graduate students as necessary
• Be available for other duties related to the Office of Personal Counseling and/or University activities as assigned
• Provide shared on-call phone coverage and evening coverage

Qualifications / Requirements

• Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work
• Missouri LPC or LCSW licensure
• Education and work experience with substance abuse and addiction
• In-depth knowledge of counseling theory, issues, techniques and practice
• Knowledge of ethical codes (professional standards/legal issues for Licensed Professional Counselors or Licensed Clinical Social Workers)
• Knowledge of crisis management
• Clinical skills in providing individual, couples and group counseling services
• Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Administrative, organizational and problem-solving skills
• Initiative to develop and implement programs
• Leadership and team member skills
• Sound judgment and decision-making skills

Preferred Qualifications:
• Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor or equivalent certification
• Knowledge of and experience in higher education
• Three to five years of professional counseling experience with young adult and adult populations
