Editor St. Louis Public Radio

Description

St. Louis Public Radio has an amazing opportunity for a creative, innovative, enthusiastic editor who can take the germ of a story idea and work with reporters to turn it into an audio and online gem. We are looking for an editor to oversee our politics, education and criminal justice team. This editor is passionate about politics and policy (especially for Missouri and Illinois) who knows that telling stories about politics is explaining how policies impact everyday people.

This position is a supervisory one, overseeing a team of reporters and coordinating with other subject-matter and digital editors to set journalism coverage at St. Louis Public Radio. The position is ideal for someone whose interests are diverse and who is knowledgeable about issues specific to our region, but who can also make connections to national relevance.

Although the job does not require radio experience, the ability to learn the intricacies of radio journalism – and understand how editing for radio differs from print – is essential. Additionally, candidates should be comfortable creating online stories that push the boundaries of traditional storytelling.

Above all, the ideal candidate should also have a record of journalistic excellence, a passion for storytelling and enthusiasm for innovation.

Responsibilities

This person will:

  • Be willing to experiment with multiple forms of storytelling, for the web, the radio and mobile.
  • Help foster community discussion around politics and public policy that are impacting the region.
  • Have the capacity to do his or her own reporting, if needed.
  • Work cooperatively with other editors in the newsroom to help support St. Louis Public Radio's mission to provide our community with news that matters.

Qualifications / Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field is required. The candidate must have a minimum of five years experience as a reporter and/or editor. Successful previous public radio reporting and audio digital editing experience is desirable.

Please submit work samples of either your own reporting or of stories that you guided to completion. Please explain your role in editing those stories. If submitting audio samples, please provide a CD or MP3 file. Send hard copies to: Shula Neuman, St. Louis Public Radio, 3651 Olive Street., St. Louis, MO 63108; or electronic samples to sneuman@stlpublicradio.org. Your application should include a cover letter outlining your qualifications and ideas for how your work can best serve St. Louis area residents.
